 A society's attitudes and values toward men and women are reflected in the

language of that society. If we look at English carefully, we can see 

how people in English-speaking cultures view men and women.

I. Are Men More Important than Women?

In English, there are many examples to show that men have been considered

more important than women. First, in most English pairs of male/ female

words, male words are put first: Mr. and Mrs., husband and wife, boys and

girls, men and women, kings and queens, brothers and sisters, etc.

Also, in most pairs of words with male and female forms, such as

hero-heroine, steward-stewardess, and host-hostess, the male words are

considered the base.
